There are several web hosts on the boards.ie forums, who are planning to set up an Irish web hosting association of sorts, to promote and encourage good practices and standards in their IT sector. Although it’s still in a very early stage yet, I can see that there will be a lot of flaming, as there has been in the past among individuals, and unless it’s controlled, it would be a tragic end to something that hasn’t been given a chance to start.
A flaw I would foresee in such an institution is that these standards are being set by a select few web hosts themselves, and thus they will set the bar where they see fit, not too high, but somewhere that will inevitably make someone look bad. A more independently run body would be better suited to the job.
Not to end on a sour note, I wish all involved the best of luck, and this really is a positive move if they co-operate on issues like becoming a representative body of their sector and the education of better standards of their members.
